Bathrooms are the one room where the flooring conversation starts and ends with water. Tile in some form is almost always the right answer — the interesting question is which form: classic stone-look formats, or the wood-look porcelain planks that have taken over half our bathroom remodels.
The case for wood-look porcelain
Wood-look planks let a bathroom flow visually from a hardwood or LVP hallway without a jarring material change at the door. The realism of current-generation planks surprises people — grain texture, color variation plank to plank, and none of wood's moisture anxiety.
The case for classic formats
Large-format stone-look tile makes small Orange County bathrooms feel bigger, with fewer grout lines to clean. Mosaics still rule the shower floor — all those grout joints are exactly what your feet need for grip on a wet slope toward the drain.
Whatever the look, ask about the slip rating for floors and insist on proper waterproofing behind anything in the shower. The waterproofing you cannot see matters more than the tile you can.
Where the money actually goes
In bathrooms, labor and prep usually outweigh the tile itself — demolition, backer board, waterproofing and layout are what you are really paying for. That is also why bathroom tile is a poor place for the cheapest bid. Done right, a tiled bathroom floor is a decades-long floor.
