Laminate has a reputation built on products from twenty years ago, and it has moved on more than most flooring categories. It is worth a fresh look, particularly for households where scratching is the main worry rather than water.
What laminate is genuinely best at
Scratch resistance. The aluminium-oxide wear layer on laminate is harder than the finish on most hardwood and harder than many vinyl wear layers. If your first concern is a large dog, laminate outperforms both.
It is also dimensionally stable and takes strong Southern California light well — the printed layer holds its colour better than many wood species do, and sun fading is a real consideration in rooms with big west-facing windows here.
The one weakness that decides where it goes
The core is compressed wood fibre. Water-resistant laminate buys you time against a spill, and modern waterproof-core products are genuinely better, but the honest position is that laminate belongs in living areas, bedrooms and hallways rather than in a bathroom or a laundry room.
That is not a limitation you have to work around — it is simply where the material is strongest. For rooms with a real water risk we would put you on waterproof luxury vinyl or tile instead.
The slab question, which matters here
Most Orange County homes sit on a concrete slab, and slabs pass moisture vapour upward. The amount varies seasonally more than people expect, and vapour arriving from underneath over months will swell a laminate core just as effectively as a spill would.
Because it happens slowly and invisibly, the first sign is usually seams lifting across a whole area rather than a single obvious event. A moisture reading before installation tells us whether a barrier is needed. It takes minutes and it prevents the most expensive kind of laminate failure.
Three installation details that decide the outcome
Laminate is a floating floor, which means it needs a continuous expansion gap around the perimeter, hidden under the baseboard. Without it the floor lifts or peaks — the most common laminate failure by a wide margin, and completely preventable.
It needs underlayment, which controls how the floor sounds and feels and cushions the locking joints. Some products have it pre-attached; that is worth checking rather than paying for it twice or ending up with none.
And it needs a flat subfloor. Dips cause the locking joints to flex until they separate, which produces an unexplained gap in the middle of a floor.
