Fiber, twist, density, pad
Fiber is the material: nylon is the durability benchmark, triexta brings serious stain resistance, polyester offers value and color. Twist is how tightly each tuft is wound — higher twist bounces back instead of matting. Density is how much fiber is packed per square inch: part the pile with your fingers, and if you can easily see the backing, keep shopping.
And the pad: it is not the place to save forty dollars. A quality pad makes a mid-grade carpet feel premium and last years longer. An entry-level pad quietly shortens the life of whatever you put over it.
Stairs are a different animal
Stairs concentrate every footstep on a few inches of nosing, so they need higher twist and density than the bedroom the staircase leads to.
